World Taxpayers‘ Conference 2016 in Berlin
The honorary president of SME EUROPE, Dr. Paul RÜBIG MEP, presented the European Union approach to good governance to an international audience on the World Taxpayers‘ Conference from the 17th to the 19th of March 2016 in Berlin.
Guests from all over the world met in Berlin to discuss a wide range of topics under the title “Low Taxes and Good Governance – Necessity in an Uncertain World?!”. The biannual conference in which SME EUROPE acted as cooperation partner was opened by Johannes SINGHAMMER MP, Vice-President of the German Bundestag. It successfully highlighted the taxation issues which currently challenge governments from all over the world.
In his keynote, Prof Dr Helge BRAUN, Minister of State Germany, Federal Government Coordinator for Bureaucracy Reduction and Better Regulation and Federal Government Coordinator for Relations between the Federation and the Federal States, called for a better cooperation between partners, be it cities, regions, states or countries. In this context, Dr. Rübig emphasized the necessity for a global approach: “We as lawmakers in the European Union often see the negative results of insufficient cooperation between the member states of the European Union. We need to put more effort into closing all the loopholes which allow companies and individuals to evade taxes!” The necessity of this position was underlined by Markus FERBER MEP, Senator of SME EUROPE, in his speech, illuminating the necessity for transparency in the European Union, as well as by the former MEP Klaus-Heiner LEHNE, Member of European Court of Auditors.
Luděk NIEDERMAYER MEP focused in his exchange with the renowned professors Neville NORMAN, Martin WENZ and Richard VEDDER on the reduction of red tape and the possibilities for countries to boost their economy through efficient tax legislation while Elmar BROK MEP illustrated the current fiscal policy of the European Union.
